Blood Markers predictors for Suicide?

The Huffington Post published an article August 22, 2013 on the possibility for using blood proteins as predictive markers for potential suicide. Interesting, but still much more research needs to be done.

So far, the sample sizes are much too low to be conclusive, and blood tests were only on white, male subjects (by far THE most common group to die by suicide).

The article did not say, but where such tests could really contribute is in the decision whether to release a patient from care. Currently, medical professionals have a list of risk factors, warning signs and their own personal observations about when a patient in treatment is ready to go home. It comes down to am informed hunch and sometimes professionals are wrong on either side of the go/stay question.

If reliable, a blood test could be excellent additional evidence.
